County Durham

Known as the land of the Prince Bishops, County Durham is a magnificent county with a rich history, and some fine countryside and coastline.

Beamish Open Air Museum Victorian and industrial buildings have been rebuilt here to create a typical Northern street with shops dentists etc. Also features miner's cottages and drift mine. Fun for adults and children alike. Official website
Bowes Museum Impressive building given over to private art collection. Amongst the collection an amazing silver automaton which is in the form of a swan over water and moves to the sound of chimes. Still in working order Bowes Museum
Darlington Railway Centre Restored 1842 station on the 1825 route of the Stockton and Darlington Railway (First Railway in the World), now a museum of North East England's railways. Exhibits include Stephenson's Locomotion, Darlington Railway Centre & Museum
Durham Castle Part of the stunning skyline of historic buildings that sit high above Durham City. First built around the time of the Norman Conquest. Part of Durham University. Official Website
Durham Cathedral A "Must See" when visiting Durham. The vast cathedral towers above the city and is designated a "World Heritage Site"
