Gateshead

Gateshead has led the cultural revolution on Tyneside with the Angel of the North, the Baltic Centre for Conteporary Art, the Millennium Bridge and the Sage Music Centre.

Opened in 2005 this £70m music centre houses 2 concert halls, a music education centre, a regional music school, rehearsal rooms and informations centre. It is also the new home for the Northern Sinfonia and Folkworks.

The UK's largest contemporary arts centre outside London. Next to the tilting Millennium Bridge the old flour mill has been converted into a fantastic venue on the Gateshead side of the River Tyne. It is FREE and as well as the galleries and workshops there is a café, two restaurants (one on the roof with great skyline views - booking advised) and a shop.

Heritage Centre,

Once Europe's largest out of town shopping centre and still one of the best. 360 shops and services, including restaurant and cinemas and Europe's largest indoor theme park. 12,000 free car parking spaces, but also wells erved by bus and trains. Very popular with Scandinavian visitors. Nearby retail park also home to Ikea. More shopping

Angel of the North

Britain's largest outdoor sculpture. 20 metres high, made of weathered steel and weighing 200 tonnes it was designed by Anthony Gormley. Stands next to the A1.
