Hadrian's Wall

The most important Roman monument in Britain and now designated a World Heritage Site.

Built by Emporor Hadrian in AD 122 from coast to coast.
Below are some of the most popular points of interest on or very close to the Wall. There is now a complete path you can walk along the wall.

Chesters Fort & Museum Cilurnum Extensively excavated English Heritage
Corbridge Roman Site & Museum Corstopitum Fort and military depot on the main Roman road between York & Scotland. Close to Town of Corbridge but set away from the Roman Wall itself. English Heritage
Housesteads Fort & Museum Vercovicium Roman Fort, substantially excavated and one of the most popular sites to visit along the Wall. Also has Britain's only visible example of Roman hospital. Excellent remains of Roman lavatory system

Vindolanda Fort & Museum Vindolanda Privately owned museum on site of Roman fort. With reconstructions of Hadrian's Wall and temple. Contains rare writings and a vast collection of Roman leather shoes. Set slightly away from Roman Wall itself. Vindolanda Trust
Wallsend Segedunum Literally the "Wall's end". This is where it met the River Tyne which at this point was wide enought to be a natural defence. New visitor attraction including a Roman Bath Segedunum
