A fascinating historic gem that you can only visit by appointment. Although the buildings go back centuries this is still a work place, responsible for the training and examination of river and sea pilots. Historically it had a monopoly on pilotage of the River Tyne  which brought great wealth. The building has a chapel where the roof is designed to look like an inverted ship's hull
